If I am using the "Algorithm Lab" and I need access to external services, is there a best practice for storing access tokens/API keys for these external services without having them in the project in plain text?

Not an ideal one nor optimal one but
1) Pass that secret as parameter to algo. So you need not store it in plain text.
2) Use some kind of symetric encryption using PyCrypto or something similar and pass encryption key as parameter. Store all secrets in variables in encrypted form and decrypt using passed key parameter before using them.
