For algorithmic trading I'd recommend this book as well: Inside the Black Box. You should probably first learn programming, then paper trade for a while to learn the fundamentals of the markets...

Thanks for the suggestions on the books. Any programming recommendations for complete beginners? C# in the documentation or start with widely recommended/"easier" languages such as Python

I would recommend starting with C#. It's a beautiful, full-featured language. There are tons of resources online pertaining to learning and asking questions about C#.
