I'm wondering where to start with all of this. I have no idea what I'm doing but hey, we all start somewhere. anyone willing to mentor a newbie?

Welcome to QC!
It would be a good start to know where you're starting. If you know Python or C#, then you have some idea what you're doing. I would take a look at the documentation and examples, read the forums, and let us know your background. Do you have any experience with finance, mathematics? QC is a platform that allows you to write and license algorithms that trade different baskets of financial instruments.
An understanding of quantitative theory is high on the list of things to know.
Alphas are financial models that follow certain rules, and allow licensed users to trade with your algorithm in an automated way. That is a very basic description.
If you know things like CAPM, moving averages, reversion, MACD, and are familiar with different types of financial markets, then you're well on the way.
