Hi!
I just paid for the most basic backtest and research nodes so I could have some RAM to run my ML code. However, the process has become even more frustrating. Since I paid for the suscription it does not detect any jupyter kernel and its so frustrating. It looks that I have been able to connect by chance a few times, but it is very frustrating that I do not get proper access to the product I just paid.
I would really appreciate any help,
Please
Mia Alissi
Hi Dani – we know how frustrating kernel hiccups can be!
Here’s a step-by-step checklist to get you reliably connected and running ML notebooks:
1. Basic Browser Reset
1.1 Save your work, then use your avatar to Log Out.
1.2 Close every QuantConnect tab.
1.3 Clear your cache + cookies (Chrome: ⋮ ▸ More tools ▸ Clear browsing data).
1.4 Open a fresh window, log back in, and re-open Research.
2. Start / Stop / Restart the Research Node (Web IDE)
2.1 In the left navigation, click Research.
2.2 If there’s no kernel, click the green “Start Node” (top-right).
2.3 If it’s stuck, click ▼ ▸ Restart.
2.4 Wait a full 60–120 seconds – the node needs to boot up!
2.5 Green dot beside the node name = ready.
3. Optional: Try with Lean CLI Locally
3.1 Install once:
pip install lean quantconnect-stubs• Run
lean login(one-time set up).•
lean research(this launches Jupyter onhttp://localhost:8888).3.2 Pick the same Python version you use in QC backtests (usually 3.8).
4. Choose the Kernel in the Notebook
4.1 Click the kernel picker (top-right in the notebook).
4.2 Select “QC Python x.y Research”.
4.3 If missing: click ••• ▸ Refresh Kernels, wait 10–15s, try again.
5. After Any Node Restart
• The first connection may take 1–2 minutes.
• Hollow circle (⭘) means loading; solid (●) means connected – run a cell to check.
6. No Kernel at All? Contact Support
Include:
– Your username & email
– Subscription type (“Basic Backtest + Research Node”), date of purchase
– Notebook name/URL
– Exact time & timezone of the issue
– Screenshot of error/missing kernel
– Browser & version, OS, console log (F12 ▸ Console ▸ Save-as-TXT)
– List of steps you've already tried
Email support@quantconnect.com or open a ticket at https://www.quantconnect.com/contact.
7. Check the Forums/Docs
• Go to Community → Forums → Site Feedback for any incident threads.
• Search for “kernel” or “research node” for more tips.
8. Keep Momentum While Waiting
• Test a small ML notebook locally to confirm your code works.
• You can copy-paste code between local and QC notebooks.
Hang in there, Dani. These issues can be annoying, but once your kernel wakes up, QC nodes are usually rock-solid! You’ve taken the right first step; you’ll be training models in no time.
Happy coding – and let us know if you need more help!
