Hi QuantConnect Team,
I’ve been experiencing an issue with the research environment where, occasionally, the research nodes seem to stop functioning while using a notebook. When this happens, even running basic code (like 1 + 2) results in the cell getting stuck in an infinite running state with no execution. The code does not even involve loops, so I’m unsure what causes this issue.
Once this occurs, I cannot interrupt the code or restart the kernel. The usual failsafes like interrupting or restarting the kernel do not work. When I try to interrupt the code, it shows the "Interrupting..." message, but nothing happens. I’ve also tried closing the code space using the built-in close button and restarting the kernel, but I get a "Detecting Kernel" notice, but no actual kernel is detected upon attempting to restart. This seems to happen because the kernel is never actually shut down, and as a result, it's no longer available for use.
This issue has been disrupting my workflow, and I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered this or if there’s a way to resolve it. This happens remarkably often, if I use the research notebook environment for any meaningful amount of time. The only solution I have been doing is simply leaving QC for about 30+ minutes, and hoping it resolves itself. Any suggestions on how to avoid or fix this issue would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Leo! I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having with stuck research nodes in QuantConnect’s notebook environment. This behavior can be very disruptive, but it is (unfortunately) a somewhat common issue in notebook environments—especially if a kernel ends up in a dead or unrecoverable state.
Here are some practical steps you can try to resolve and avoid this issue:
1. Close and Fully Reopen the Notebook
2. Shutdown the Stuck Research Node
3. Close All Browser Tabs/Windows, then Reopen
4. Wait, or Try a Different Project
5. Prevent Future Crashes
6. If Problems Persist

In summary:
This is a known challenge, especially with shared or cloud-based research environments. Shutting down the stuck kernel (via resource panel, file/project explorer, or closing all tabs) is almost always necessary, and waiting a few minutes for resource cleanup is sometimes unavoidable.
If you find this happening very frequently or with small/simple code, it could indicate a deeper issue (such as resource contention or backend errors) and should be reported for deeper support.
Let me know if you need step-by-step visuals or if you want to migrate your research to a local environment for more stability!

Hi @leo-kamgar,
Please close the tab with the notebook, then click the resources icon in the right navigation menu. Finally, click the stop button next to the research node you want to stop.
After you stop the node, reopen the notebook.
If the problem persists, please open a support ticket.
Best regards,
Alex
